Just as Michelle Obama has brought Chicago-based designer Maria Pinto into the spotlight by wearing her dresses, Barack Obama, in his biggest moment (yet) in the presidential race—accepting the Democratic Party nomination—stayed faithful to Illinois by choosing “a classic two-button, navy, merino wool and cashmere suit” from Hart Schnaffner Marx, according to The Chicago Tribune. The custom-made suit was crafted in Des Plaines and reportedly took four days to make. This type of suit would cost about $1,500 at Nordstrom, the Tribune said.
This suit, along with the T-shirts and hats sold in Obama’s online campaign store, are union-made. Because clothes don’t only make the man, they make a political statement, which in this case is “Buy American.”
Hart Schnaffner Marx has been around since 1887 and claims to have “caused quite a stir” by introducing zippers in pants in 1936. An off-the-rack suit from HSM similar to Obama’s bespoke suit (pleated pants and all) costs $695 at hartschaffnermarx.com.
